Afternoons are generally more crowded than mornings. It is advisable to go as soon as the DMV opens. Mid-week tends to have shorter waits than Mondays and Fridays. The DMV often goes on lunch break around noon, leaving fewer employees. Try to avoid going during this time. Make sure you leave enough time to complete your transaction, especially if you are getting a permit or taking a road test. Also, the middle of the month tends to be better in contrast to the first and last days of the month.
DMVs are open for all driver license and ID card customers. Driver licenses can be renewed online for most customers. All vehicle transactions must be done online, by mail or 3rd party agents. Only go in person if you are a new driver or if you have a road test scheduled.
